12th IBA Women’s World Boxing Championship: Neetu reaches quarter-finals

2017 Youth World Champion Neetu (48kg) continued her stellar form as she stormed into the quarter-finals of the 12th edition of the IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships on Saturday by defeating Spain’s López del Arbol by unanimous decision.

Neetu, who won the gold medal at the Strandja Memorial Boxing Championships in Sofia this year, dominated from the start. The boxer from Bhiwani displayed relentless energy and displayed his superb footwork and speed to deliver accurate punches.

Neetu took the lead in the next two rounds and went on to win 5-0 without giving her opponent any chance.

Her next opponent will take on Kazakhstan’s Alua Balkibekova in the quarterfinals on Monday.

Later on Saturday night, Manisha (57kg) will take on Bulgaria’s Svetlana Staneva.

Six Indian boxers, including Nikhat Zareen, will be in action in the round of 16 matches on Sunday.

Nikhat (52kg) and Shiksha (54kg) will next face Mongolia’s Lutsaikhan Altantsetseg and Youth Asian bronze medalist Yesugen Oyuntsetseg, while Parveen will take on former Youth Olympic champion Jazaira Gonzalez of USA.

Anamika (50kg) will face World Championship bronze medalist Christie Lee Harris of Australia while Jasmine (60kg) will face Australia’s Angela Harris.

Meanwhile, 2017 Youth World Champion Ankushita (66kg) will make her World Championships debut against Poland’s Anita Raigilska.

This year’s event, which marks the 20th anniversary of the IBA Women’s World Championship, will be played till May 20.

In the previous edition of the tournament held in Russia in 2019, Indian boxers bagged one silver and three bronze medals.

Indian boxers have won 36 medals, including nine gold, eight silver and 19 bronze, in the past 11 editions of the tournament, the third highest after Russia (60) and China (50). In the last edition held in Russia in 2019, Indians won one silver and three bronze medals.
