The The Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill has been tabled in the Uttarakhand Assembly on Tuesday, paving the way for the state to be the first in India to have one after Goa, where it has operated since Portuguese rule. After Uttarakhand, the states of Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh also wanted to introduce UCC soon.
Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya said on Tuesday that UCC will be introduced in the state at the right time.
“I congratulate the BJP government led by Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Dhami for introducing the UCC bill in the state assembly,” Maurya said, hinting that the bill will soon be introduced in UP.
On the other hand, Rajasthan Minister Kanhaiya Lal Choudhary also stated that efforts are being made to ensure that Rajasthan becomes a state after Uttarakhand to implement the UCC Act.

“First of all I would like to thank Uttarakhand CM Dhami. It was an important matter and the people of India were waiting for it. He initiated this bill. We are working to ensure that Rajasthan becomes a post-Uttarakhand state (to implement the UCC Act)… CM supports it. He gave instructions for this, the work will be done soon. We will discuss it in the current session and if there is insufficient time, we will take it up in the next session,” Kanhaiya quoted Lal Choudhary as saying. YEARS as said.
BJP MLA Gopal Sharma also extended support for transfer of UCC to Rajasthan.
“We would also want the same thing that Uttarakhand wants. The beginning is from ‘Devabhoomi’. Rajasthan is a land of valor, we also support uniform civil code…We welcome it and hope it will be done in Rajasthan very soon…” said Sharma.
UCC Bill in Uttarakhand State Assembly
The UCC Bill proposes a common law on marriage, divorce, land, property and inheritance for all citizens irrespective of their religion in the country, except Scheduled Tribes.
“To ensure equal rights to the citizens of Uttarakhand, the Uniform Civil Code Bill will be introduced in the Assembly today. It is a moment of pride for all the people of the country to be known as the first state in the country to come close to implementing the UCC. Jai Hind, Jai Uttarakhand,” Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami said in a post on X.
The Uttarakhand government has convened a special four-day assembly session from Monday to table the legislation.
