Amritpal Singh Farrar, Punjab Police Arrest 78 Supporters; A large amount of weapons seized IG News

Amritsar: The Punjab Police on Saturday launched a statewide cordon and search operation (CASO) against the activists of ‘Waris Punjab De’. Several criminal cases have been registered against these activists. A total of 78 people have been arrested so far during the operation. Apart from this, many people have been detained for questioning. Many others including Amritpal Singh are still absconding, a massive search operation is underway to nab them.

Elaborating further in this regard, the spokesperson of Punjab Police said, ‘On Saturday afternoon, the police stopped several activities of ‘Waris Punjab De’ (WPD) workers on the Shahkot-Malsian road in Jalandhar district and seven people were arrested. Many others, including Amritpal Singh, are absconding, large-scale raids are being launched to nab them.’

So far 9 weapons have been recovered during this state level operation. These included one 0.315 bore rifle, seven 12 bore rifles, one revolver and 373 live cartridges of various calibres.

Charges laid against WPD workers

The spokesperson said, ‘WPD workers are involved in four criminal cases. These include causing social unrest, willful killing, assault on police personnel and obstruction of public servants in the lawful discharge of their duties. He further informed that Case No. 39 has been registered on 24-02-2023 against WPD workers for attacking Ajnala Police Station.

He said, ‘All persons involved in criminal cases will be dealt with according to law and all persons wanted by the police should surrender themselves to the law. Their constitutional rights regarding legal protection will be protected.’

Notably, a press release issued by the Information and Public Relations Department of Punjab has requested all citizens not to pay attention to false news and rumours. The situation in the state is fully under control and strict action will be taken against all persons involved in mischievous activities to disturb the peace and harmony of the state.
