Australia: China’s disturbing actions contradict its peaceful rhetoric

Australian Defense Minister Peter Dutton said on Friday that China’s “alarming” actions were inconsistent with its talk of promoting peace and prosperity in the region.

This came after a Chinese navy vessel was tracked sailing in Australia’s exclusive economic zone.

Dutton cited examples of China’s actions that contradict its rhetoric, including the militarization of the South China Sea, its recent hostility toward Taiwan, and the enactment of a national security law in Hong Kong.

“We are all aware of the Chinese government’s repeated claims that it is committed to peace, cooperation and development,” he said in a speech in Canberra.

“However, we are witnessing a great disconnect between words and deeds. We have followed closely the Chinese government’s involvement in increasingly disturbing activities.”

“Dutton distorts Beijing’s foreign policy, misleads the Australian people and fuels conflict and division between peoples and nations,” the Chinese embassy in Canberra said.

Australia confirmed that it had observed a Chinese intelligence ship sailing in August in its exclusive economic zone, but not in its territorial waters.
