1. Swachh Survekshan Awards 2023

On January 11, the Central Government announced the results of Swachh Survekshan 2023 at the Bharat Mandapam Convention Center in New Delhi. In this, Indore ranks first among cities with more than one lakh population for the seventh time. Surat took the top spot along with Indore.

2. Adani Group hands over first drone to Indian Navy

The Indian Navy took delivery of its first indigenous ‘Medium-Altitude Long-Endurance’ drone on January 10 in Hyderabad in the presence of Chief of Naval Staff Admiral R. Hari Kumar. The name of this drone is “Drishti 10 Starliner” Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV). Technology transfer assistance through Israeli defense company Elbit System was also used to prepare this drone.

3. Norway will be able to extract precious metals from the sea

On January 10, the Norwegian parliament (Storting) approved deep-sea mining. Accordingly, metals and minerals such as cobalt, copper and zinc will be extracted from the seabed to make electronic devices such as mobile laptop computers. After this decision of the parliament, the problems of environmental researchers and scientists increased. According to scientists, deep-sea commercial mining seriously threatens marine life, biodiversity and the ecosystem.

As soon as deep-sea mining begins, Norway will become the first country in the world to allow the extraction of precious metals from the sea. Following this approval, companies can now apply for deep sea mining, after which mining can begin. The United Nations (UN)-affiliated International Seabed Agency (ISA) has so far issued permits to 14 countries to explore the deep sea for research only. These countries are India, China, Russia, South Korea, Great Britain, France, Poland, Brazil, Japan, Jamaica, Nauru, Tonga, Kiribati and Belgium.

4. Sameer Kumar Sinha became Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Defence

On January 9, the central government appointed senior IAS officer Sameer Kumar Sinha as additional secretary and director general (acquisition) in the defense ministry. He has been working as Principal Secretary to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for the last two and a half years.
