Canada has updated its travel advisory for its citizens in India. In the new travel advisory, people have been asked to remain alert and take precautions in view of recent developments. It said the travel advisory has been updated due to calls for protests and negative sentiment toward Canada on social media.
The Canadian government said in an update on Sunday that there have been calls for protests and some negative sentiment towards Canada on social media following recent developments in Canada and India. Please be alert and take precautions. Earlier, India had issued a similar advisory for Indian citizens and students living in Canada. India also suspended visa services in Canada last week.
Tensions between India and Canada increased following Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s allegations of possible involvement of Indian agents in the killing of Khalistani extremist Hardeep Singh Nijjar on June 18 in British Columbia. India had declared Nijjar a terrorist in 2020. India rejected the allegations as ‘absurd’ and ‘motivated’ and expelled a senior Canadian diplomat in retaliation for Ottawa’s expulsion of an Indian official over the matter.
