New Delhi: Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot met Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday after giving a clear indication of contesting for the post of Congress President. It is believed that during his meeting with Sonia Gandhi, the topics related to the election of the President were mainly discussed. Before the meeting, Gehlot gave a clear indication of contesting for the post of Congress President and said that he will accept the decision of the party people.

Gehlot also said that he would go to Kochi to make his last attempt to persuade Rahul Gandhi to take over as the party president. He said that he would decide what to do next only after talking to Rahul Gandhi. Gehlot will travel to Mumbai this evening after meeting Congress President Sonia Gandhi in Delhi and will travel to Kerala on Thursday, where he will meet Rahul Gandhi and participate in the ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’. On the other hand, senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has already indicated that he will contest for the post of president. Tharoor met Congress’s Central Election Authority chief Madhusudan Mistry here.

As per the announced schedule for the election of Congress President, the notification will be issued on September 22 and the process of filing nomination papers will go on from September 24 to 30. The last date for withdrawal of nomination papers is October 8. In case of more than one candidate, voting will be held on October 17 and results will be declared on October 19. (agency)
