Centurion, September 16 (Language) Australian opener Travis Head suffered a fracture in his left hand during the fourth ODI against South Africa, raising doubts over his participation in the World Cup next month.
In the fourth ODI here on Friday, in the seventh over, South African fast bowler Gerald Coetzee’s short ball hit his left hand ‘glove’, after which the player faced three more balls but he looked uncomfortable and had to retire hurt. Australia had to face a crushing defeat in this match by 164 runs.
“The fracture has been confirmed,” Australia head coach Andrew McDonald said in a post-match press conference. ,
He said that more scans of his hand will be done on Saturday after which more information will be available about his injury.
MacDonald said, “How much time will it take for him to recover from this will be known only tomorrow.” ,
There are only a few weeks left for the World Cup starting in India from October 5 and if Head is unable to play in the initial matches, then Mitchell Marsh can be made to open the innings.
But if Head is out of the World Cup, the Australian selectors can include in-form Marnus Labuschagne in the team.
