The drug regulatory agency has issued another warning to pharmaceutical companies and importers. It requires barcodes to be used on domestic and imported medicines within two weeks.

Drap said the purpose of printing barcodes on medicine boxes is to prevent counterfeiting. Failure to do so within the stipulated time frame will result in strict legal action.

In this regard, pharmaceutical companies say that barcodes cannot be printed on drugs in such a short time. There is no mechanism for printing and reading barcodes nationwide.

Drug companies say printing barcodes on boxes will also increase the cost of the drugs.
