Puber’s Pen Correspondent: Fair Price Medicine Shop i.e. a patient is getting all medicines from Fair Price Medicine Shop. It is also alleged that no patient is getting any medicine. Similar pictures were seen in various government hospitals. An official of the state health department said that an inquiry will be made in this matter.
Since 2012, fair price drug shops have been opened one after the other in different levels of government hospitals in West Bengal under Public Private Partnership (PPP) model. Any of these stores offer discounts of up to 70 percent on the maximum retail price of the drug. For example, a discount of 66.25 percent is available at Neelratan Sarkar Medical College and Hospital’s fair price drug stores.
But, what about, are all the medicines always available from the drug store at a fair price? The two-and-a-half-year-old son of Lalon Sheikh, a resident of Murshidabad’s Beldanga, is admitted to Neelratan Sarkar Medical College and Hospital. In his words, the hospital asked to buy a syrup for the boy. Bought this syrup from a fair price drug store here.’ Shyamal Mondal, a resident of Garia, came to this hospital for the treatment of a relative. He said, ‘Drugs are available from drug stores here at fair prices.’
However, a relative of a patient at Neelratan Sarkar Medical College and Hospital, who did not want to be named, complained, ‘All the medicines are not available in the fair price drug store here.’ 56.6 percent discount available at Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital Fair Price Pharmacy located in Park Circus area of Kolkata. What is the situation here? What goes into getting all the drugs all the time?
Abul Bashar Mollah, a resident of Maheshtla, came to Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital for his skin problem. He returns from the fair price drug store here with a practically disappointed face. Doctor Babu saw you and gave you medicine, did you find medicine here? Abul Bashar Mollah complains, ‘I don’t have any medicine in this fair price drug store.’ At the same time, he said, ‘What else can I do, I have to buy from outside now.’
A 180-degree reversal of such complaints was heard at Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital, as was the case with this patient. Shyamal Biswas, a resident of Kamalghazi, came to this hospital for treatment of one of his relatives. He said, ‘I got all the medicines from the fair price drug store here. There was no problem.’
Are not all drugs always available at fair prices in all drug stores? When a top level official of the health department was asked about this matter, he said, ‘It should not happen like this. What is happening, inquiries are being made.’
