It comes a week after four Americans were abducted by gunmen after crossing the border from Texas into Mexico, an incident in which two of the friends were shot dead.
Penitas police chief Roel Barmea told The Associated Press that their families have been in contact with Mexican authorities, who are investigating their disappearances.
US customs officials say the three women left for Mexico on February 24, and the husband of one of them became concerned when he could not contact her.
“Since he could not make contact that weekend, he came that Monday and informed us,” Barmia said.
The women travel in a mid-1990s Chevy Silverado to a flea market in the town of Montemorelos in Nuevo Leon state, which is a three-hour drive from the border.
Officials from the state prosecutor’s office said they have been investigating his disappearance since Monday.
