Federal government decides to merge drug trafficking prevention units

The Central Government has decided to merge the drug prevention units functioning under the Union Ministry of Finance under the Union Ministry of Home Affairs.

The Narcotics Control Unit is functioning under the Central Ministry of Home Affairs. However, the Drugs and Psychiatric Act-1985 and the Drug Trafficking Act-1988 operate under the Revenue Department of the Federal Ministry of Finance. As a result, the Federal Revenue Service handles cases of drug and gold smuggling at airports and ports.

According to local government sources, the Union government has decided to bring all these under the purview of the Union Home Ministry.
