Kolkata: Cases of gold smuggling are constantly coming to light in West Bengal. Now gold worth Rs 55 crore has been found on the streets of Kolkata. About 11 kg of gold was being transported in a Maruti Alto car on the Belgharia Expressway. The car was found suspiciously parked on the road around 4am on Friday. Belgharia police searched the car and recovered the gold. Police have arrested four people including the car driver in this case. DC Ajay Prasad said that the arrested people are being questioned about where the gold came from and where it was being taken.

According to sources, the police were already aware of this. So the police in that area had already been alerted. Police became suspicious after seeing a car parked near Barrackpore on Friday morning. After that, when the car was searched, 11 kg gold was seized.

11 kg gold found in Maruti car

Police said that a bag in the Maruti car contained several gold bars. After preliminary investigation, he guessed that the car was going towards Medinipur via BT Road. Preliminary investigation has revealed that the car’s number plate belongs to West Bengal. About 11 kg of gold has been seized from the Maruti Alto car.

Police are interrogating the arrested people. Earlier too, Kolkata airport and BSF have seized large quantities of gold. BSF has conducted three major operations against gold smuggling.

The accused will be produced in court

Police is investigating who the gold belongs to. The police of Belgharia police station are investigating where the gold was going. Surjit Mukherjee, Rajaram Pawar, Mayur Manohar Patil and Ganesh Chauhan, who were arrested for this, have been sent to the Barakpur court with an application for 14-day police custody. He will be produced in the court today and remand will be sought. After the investigation, it is believed that the police will be able to find the source of the gold. This is the first such seizure of such a large quantity of gold in recent times in the vicinity of Kolkata.
