Government appoints career diplomat as new ambassador to China, say sources IG News

IG news Update,

Career diplomat Jennifer May will be named the new ambassador to China, a position that has been vacant since late last year, sources tell CBC News.

May will replace Dominic Barton, who quit in late December after the release of alleged Canadian spies Michael Spavor and Michael Kovrig, who were detained by China for nearly three years.

The sources spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly on the matter. An official announcement is expected by Friday. This news was first reported by the Globe and Mail.

According to the Government of Canada website, Global Affairs has been with Canada since May 1990, previously serving as Ambassador to Brazil and Deputy Chief of Mission at the Canadian Embassy in Germany.

She has also posted in Hong Kong, Beijing and Bangkok.

Sources said the Chinese government had earlier this week agreed to accept May as the ambassador.

A source said May speaks five languages, including Mandarin.
