Guelph man, teen arrested in Cambridge on charges of attempted grandparenting scam IG News

According to the Waterloo Regional Police, two Guelph men are in custody after an attempted “grandparents scam”.

Police say people reporting the grandparenting scam contacted them 14 times on Wednesday.

Around 6 pm, the police received a call informing them that the scam was going on near King and Eagle Street.

Police say the suspects called the victim, an 82-year-old Cambridge resident, saying that her grandson had been arrested and that $15,000 was needed for bail.

The intended victim immediately sensed the scam and called the police.

Police say officers soon arrived at the scene and arrested a 20-year-old man and a 16-year-old girl, both from Guelph. The pair have been charged with fraud to the tune of more than $5,000.
