Attention Premier League. The competition’s deadliest attacking combination returns in tandem.

Attention Premier League. The competition’s deadliest attacking combination returns in tandem.

Erling Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne — both recently back from long injury layoffs — combined for the main goal in Manchester City’s 2-0 win over Everton on Saturday in what will be a worrying sight for the defending champions’ rivals.

Liverpool remain top of the table after a 3-1 win over Burnley, with City sitting ominously on the shoulders of the leaders, two points behind with a game in hand and their star strikers back in action.

De Bruyne has netted Haaland 12 times since they started playing together at the start of last season after the striker moved to England. No other Premier League partnership has scored as many goals in that period.

And there was something so familiar about the way De Bruyne picked up the ball in midfield and slid into Haaland, who took his marker off the ball and spread his body to fire home in the 85th minute. It was Haaland’s second of the game after he broke Everton’s stubborn resistance in the 71st when he pounced on a loose ball for a corner.

City have won six games in a row in the league and 10 in a row in all competitions.

Still, Liverpool are holding firm at the top, with Diogo Jota, Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez – the starting three, with Mohamed Salah out injured – all scoring at Anfield. Vincent Kompany, the Man City great who manages Burnley, could not do his old club any favours.

Liverpool bounced back from just their second league defeat of the season against Arsenal last weekend, although there could be concerns over Trent Alexander-Arnold’s fitness after he came off at half-time with the score 1-1.

Son Heung-min marked his return from the Asian Cup with South Korea by setting up Brennan Johnson for an injury-time winner as Tottenham beat Brighton 2-1. Elsewhere, Fulham beat Bournemouth 3-1, Ivan Toney scored again as Brentford won 2-0 at Wolverhampton and bottom-placed Sheffield United won 3-1 at relegation rivals Luton for just the third time this season.
