Holi Milan | CJI Chandrachud skips ‘Holi Milan’ event after heated argument with bar chief IG News

New Delhi. Chief Justice DY Chandrachud on Friday opted out of the ‘Holi Milan’ event organized by the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), which he was to attend as the chief guest. On Thursday, a heated argument was witnessed between the Chief Justice and SCBA chief Vikas Singh during the hearing of a matter related to the allotment of land of Appu Ghar to lawyers’ ‘chamber’.

The Chief Justice had to direct the senior advocate not to raise his voice and leave the courtroom. The SCBA had organized a poetry reading on Friday, in which the Chief Justice was invited as the chief guest. Eminent poets like Ashok Chakradhar and Shambhu Shikhar recited their poems at the event.

The SCBA president, while mentioning the matters on Thursday, told a bench comprising justices Chandrachud, PS Narasimha and JB Pardiwala that he has been trying to get the matter listed for the last six months.

Singh said, “On the petition of SCBA, the land of Appu Ghar was given to the Supreme Court and SCBA was reluctantly given only one block. The construction work on this land was to start during the tenure of former Chief Justice NV Ramana. For the last six months, we are trying to get the matter listed. Let me be treated like a simple litigant.

Then the Chief Justice said, “You cannot ask for land like this. You tell us one day, when we are sitting idle all day. To this Singh said, “I did not say that you are sitting idle all day. I am just trying to list the matter. If this is not done, I will have to take the matter up to your residence. I don’t want the bar to behave like this.” Justice Chandrachud got angry on this.

He said, “Don’t threaten the Chief Justice. Should it be treated like this? have a seat please. It will not be listed as such. Please leave my court. I will not list (the matter) like this. You can’t pressure me.”

He said, “Mr. Vikas Singh, don’t raise your voice so high. As President you should be the mentor and leader of the Bar. I am sorry that you are lowering the standard of communication. You have filed a petition under Article 32 claiming that the land allotted to the Supreme Court should be given to the Bar for construction of the Chamber. We will see it when the matter comes. Don’t try to run us on your own terms.”

Justice Chandrachud said, “You are asking the court to give the allotted land to the Bar. I have given my verdict. This matter will be heard on 17th (March) and it will not be number one in the list of cases. (agency)
