Pakistan witnessed violence, clashes and chaos on May 9 following the arrest of former Prime Minister Imran Khan at the Islamabad High Court. His supporters ransacked and damaged sensitive military installations across the country. The army has pointed to the arrest of its supporters, instigated by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and its chief Imran Khan, which has led to attacks against military installations, and prosecution of them has been started.

It is a known fact that Imran Khan has been very vocal in naming and defaming the army chief as well as other senior serving army and intelligence officers. In his statement on 9 May, before leaving for Islamabad from his Zaman Park residence in Lahore, he once again warned the military establishment that he was prepared to face consequences if any attempt was made to arrest him.
