The third federal budget of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government was presented in the National Assembly. Opposition protests remained unconventional. After the budget speech, Prime Minister Imran Khan went to the seat of Finance Minister Shaukat Tareen and slapped him. What was unique about the budget session?
The budget session began with the recitation of the Holy Quran followed by the recitation of the Naat. Meanwhile, several government members approached Prime Minister Imran Khan and started talking about their problems. The Speaker directed them to take their seats.
During the budget speech, the opposition members started protesting by standing on their seats. The budget documents were used to play the desk. Meanwhile, Shahbaz Sharif and Bilawal Bhutto Zardari also stood on their seats. Anti-government slogans were also chanted.
To avoid the noise of the opposition, the Prime Minister put headphones on his ears and stared at the roof of the House for a long time.
On one occasion, PML-N members Maryam Aurangzeb, Seema Jilani, Shaista Malik, Rubina Khurshid and others managed to stand behind the Finance Minister carrying anti-government placards so that their message could reach the people through the camera.
The Speaker summoned Sergeant at Arms to control the situation. Meanwhile, female members of PTI, Asma Hadid, Azmi Riaz, Nuzhat Khan and Shandana Gulzar tore up placards from the League women.
After that, the women of the league went to their seats.
This time the opposition’s protest was quite unconventional, neither the Finance Minister, the Speaker and the Prime Minister’s seat was cordoned off, nor were the budget documents torn up and tossed in the air, nor was the token walkout.
