Indrani Mukerjea to stay in jail for one more night despite bail; why over here
A day after the Supreme Court granted bail to Indrani Mukerjea, the prime accused in the murder of her daughter Sheena Bora was not released from jail on Thursday due to incomplete paperwork, NDTV reported. The former media officer will come out of jail on Friday as the CBI court allowed him to be released on a cash surety of Rs 2 lakh. Indrani Mukerjea is currently lodged in Byculla Women’s Jail in Mumbai since her arrest in August 2015.
Special Judge for CBI Cases VC Barde on Thursday asked Mukherjee to furnish a guarantor of Rs 2 lakh within two weeks. In the meantime, she can be released as soon as she submits a temporary cash bond for the same amount, the judge said in the order.
The order said Mukherjee should surrender his passport before the special court and should not leave India without the court’s permission. The court also directed Mukherjee not to approach any witness in the case or tamper with the evidence. He said that he should join the trial and not seek any adjournment.
“If there is any violation of the above conditions, the prosecution shall be at liberty to apply for cancellation of bail,” Justice Barde said in his order. “The accused is ready to grant cash bail provisionally. He may be released on bail on furnishing of cash bail bond,” the order said.
A three-judge bench headed by Supreme Court Justice L Nageswara Rao on Wednesday granted bail to Indrani Mukerjea, observing that the jail term of six and a half years is too long and the trial will not be completed soon. Of the 237 witnesses cited by the prosecution, only 68 have been examined so far.
Indrani Mukerjea, wife of former media executive and media baron Peter Mukerjea, was arrested in 2015 for the alleged murder of her own daughter Sheena Bora (24) in April 2012. He had planned the murder in view of the live-in relationship. His daughter with Rahul Mukherjee, who is Peter Mukerjea’s son through his previous wife.
The murder was brought to light three years after Bora’s death on August 21, 2015, with the arrest of Shyamvar Rai, Indrani’s former driver, on charges of illegally possessing weapons.
During interrogation, Rai told the police that he was aware of a murder that took place in April 2012 and accused Indrani Mukerjea of strangling her daughter Sheena in her car with the help of her ex-husband Sanjeev Khanna.
Bora, his daughter from an earlier relationship, was killed by Indrani and Khanna in a car that Rai was driving, and the body was buried the next day in a forest in neighboring Raigad district. Police said the body was found in a mutilated state a month after the murder, but remained unidentified for three years until Rai’s alleged revelations.
The case was transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in September 2015. In November 2015, the CBI arrested Peter Mukerjea for allegedly being part of the conspiracy. The CBI said Indrani and Peter were unhappy with Sheena Bora’s relationship with Peter Mukerjea’s son Rahul. It said that there was also a financial dispute between Sheena and her mother.
In a trial in 2017, Indrani Mukerjea’s driver Shyamvar Rai revealed that he contacted Rai through his assistant and spoke to him on Skype, taking care of his family’s medical and educational needs if he helped them in the murder. promised.
Indrani denied the allegations in court and said she was innocent in the case. Rai was lying, and on one occasion when both of them were being brought to court in the same vehicle, he asked for Rs 50 lakh to “shut up”.
During her bail hearing, where she argued in person, Indrani claimed that Rai later reduced the amount to Rs 5 lakh, but did not entertain her as she was innocent.
Former media baron Peter Mukerjea’s marriage to Indrani Mukerjea ended in 2019 during his term of imprisonment.
Additional Solicitor General SV Raju, appearing for the CBI, told the Supreme Court that there is strong evidence in the form of call records about Indrani Mukerjea’s involvement in the case. He said that the remaining 50 per cent witnesses have been released and the trial will be over soon. He opposed the bail plea and told the top court that one of the important witnesses, Sheena Bora’s alleged lover Rahul Mukherjee, is to be examined on May 27.
