Nirufa Khatun: The Calcutta Municipality (KMC) was shaken after the Haridebpur accident. The municipality will test all the electricity poles in the city. Besides, the city authorities have started a third party investigation with the Director of Electricity of the State Electricity Board and a professor of the Electrical Department of Jadavpur University to find out the reason behind how the pole was electrocuted. Besides, more awareness is being taken in the slums. The CESC and the municipality will jointly inspect the slums to find out which ones are dangerous.

The municipality has not yet filed an FIR against anyone at the police station. But the arrow of suspicion is on a local promoter. It was seen on the spot that a promoter was constructing next to the pole which was electrocuted. The municipality thinks that the promoter was illegally digging in the ground under the cursed pole and was constructing with electricity connection. The poles become electrically conductive due to accumulation of water in the rain. The same complaint was made by the local residents. Locals said the promoter’s meterbox next to where the construction was taking place was stealing electricity from the ground to cut off the CESC. Tarak Singh said the municipality would lodge a complaint with the police station after receiving the investigation report. The mayor reprimanded KEIIP at the meeting on water accumulation in Haridebpur area. From now on, the municipality will inspect every work of KEIIP. The boroughs have also been warned on this day. The municipality is providing extra people to test the electricity poles in the parks.
BSNL’s obsolete poles have been ordered to be removed, said Mayor Parishad (Alo) Sandiparanjan Bokshi. There are more than one thousand BSNL poles in the city. Most of these are no longer used. On the same day, the BSNL authorities alleged that the municipality had illegally occupied multiple telephone poles and installed lights. The municipality has installed lights on the poles that have been electrocuted. However, he also said that if the letter is received, the obsolete poles will be removed.
