Second Additional Sessions Judge BK Komala in Chitradurga had issued a non-bailable warrant and directed the police to produce Mahant Shiv Murthy Sharan before him by Tuesday.
Mahant was in custody from September 1, 2022 in the first of two cases under the ‘Protection of Children from Sexual Offences’ (POCSO) Act and was granted bail by the High Court on November 8. He was subsequently released from jail here on November 16.
After Mahant’s release, he was staying at Virakta Mutt in Davangere from where he was arrested by Chitradurga police today.
The High Court has imposed several bail conditions on Mahant in one of the two POCSO Act cases against him, including barring him from entering Chitradurga district until the investigation into those cases is complete.
Mahanta was released on a personal bond of Rs 2 lakh and two sureties of the same amount and was warned not to tamper with evidence and influence witnesses.
The first complaint against Mahant was made by an NGO in Mysore. It accused Mahant of sexually harassing minors studying at a maths school and staying in his hostel.
The second case was registered on the complaint of a mother of two minor girls who alleged that her two daughters and two other minor girls were sexually abused by Mahant in 2019 and 2022 when they were staying in a hostel.
