A Missouri baby died when his mother accidentally put him to sleep in the oven, a prosecutor said Saturday.
Mariah Thomas of Kansas City was charged with endangering the welfare of a child. Court records do not yet indicate whether Thomas has an attorney, and Thomas’ phone directory could not be located.
Police responded to a report of an infant not breathing Friday afternoon. The probable cause statement states that paramedics found the child with visible burns. The child was dead at the scene of the accident.
The affidavit says the witness said the mother “put the child to sleep and mistakenly put her in the oven instead of the crib.”
The statement did not offer an explanation for how the error occurred.
“We recognize the horrific nature of this tragedy and our hearts are heavy for the loss of this precious life,” Jackson County District Attorney Jean Peters Baker said in a statement. “We trust that the criminal justice system will respond appropriately to these horrific circumstances.”
