The three-day NATO summit kicks off today in Washington.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron and NATO Secretary General Stoltenberg attend a summit hosted by US President Joe Biden.

The meeting to mark the 75th anniversary of the military alliance is focusing on the war in Ukraine, with member states expected to announce an additional $43 billion in aid to Ukraine over the next year.

News agencies said the meeting was likely to discuss China’s growing influence in Asia and the Pacific.

NATO was founded in 1949 to counter the former Soviet Union during the Cold War. Today, the 12-nation alliance has expanded to 32 countries.

The meeting was attended by the head of new member Sweden for the first time. Despite Russia’s opposition, Ukraine is also keen on NATO membership.
