Kolkata, Aug 30 (PTI) NorthEast United FC fans complained of being targeted with stones and slippers along with racial slurs following East Bengal’s memorable win in the Durand Cup semi-finals.

16-time Durand Cup champions East Bengal defeated NorthEast United FC 5-3 in the penalty shootout here on Tuesday to reach the final of the tournament after 19 years.

East Bengal team was trailing 0-2 at one time but it was successful in making a strong comeback in the last moments.

NorthEast United fans, numbering around 100, present at the ground alleged that East Bengal supporters threw stones at them and used obscene words.

During this time, the situation became such that the Indian Army and local police had to intervene to ensure the safe evacuation of NorthEast United FC supporters.

However, no official complaint has been received yet regarding this incident.

All India Football Federation (AIFF) general secretary Shaji Prabhakaran has promised action.

“Sad to hear this,” Prabhakaran posted on social media platform X (formerly Twitter). We will take up this matter. We will not tolerate such incidents at all. We have to make every possible effort to completely eliminate such issues from Indian football.

Both teams, however, have condemned the incident.
