The High Level Committee for “One Nation, One Election” on Friday began discussions with the Electoral Commission of the States empowered to conduct local body elections. An official statement was also issued in this regard. He said the committee met Rajasthan state election commissioner Madhukar Gupta, former Delhi and Chandigarh state election commissioner Sanjay Srivastava and former Haryana state election commissioner Dalip Singh. Meanwhile, the committee’s new secretary Rajiv Mani, who is also the legislative secretary in the law ministry, was also present during the deliberations.
It is worth noting that the committee, headed by former President Ram Nath Kovind and set up in September last year, has been entrusted with the task of studying and making recommendations on the issue of holding simultaneous elections to the Lok Sabha, State Assembly, Municipalities and Panchayats as soon as possible.
The Election Commission is responsible for conducting elections for the President, Vice President, Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha, State Assembly and State Legislative Council. State election commissions are separate bodies according to the constitution. National election commissions conduct elections to local bodies. Earlier, opposition parties such as AAP, RPI, Communist Party of India (CPI) and Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) met with the committee.
