Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed New President of UAE
Sheikh Mohammed, the Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, has been selected by the Federal Supreme Council of the UAE. They will have a five-year term before they are eligible for re-election. The development comes after United Arab Emirates (UAE) President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, 73, died on Friday.
40 days of official mourning
Following his tragic death, the Ministry of Presidential Affairs has announced a 40-day official mourning, with flags hanging across the UAE. Attendance services and private sector services at all UAE ministries at the federal and local level have also been suspended for three days.
The Ministry of Presidential Affairs has condoled the death of President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed al-Nahyan to the UAE people, Arab and Islamic countries and the world. Sheikh Khalifa took over as UAE’s second president in November 2004. He was the 16th ruler of Abu Dhabi.
He had undergone surgery after being paralyzed, though he has not made public appearances since 2014, although he continues to issue judgments.
