This is not the first time Gadkari has emphasized on additional security features for passengers. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) issued a draft notification in January, ordering one-to-one side / side airbags to be fitted for front row persons in Category M1 vehicles manufactured after October 1, 2022. Outboard seating positions, and two side curtains / tube air bags, one for each person sitting in the outboard seating position. Thus, a total of six airbags will be fitted.

“We need cooperation from all stakeholders (including the automobile industry),” Gadkari said at the event. He pointed out that all the global automobile brands are available in India. Noting that safe roads are very important, he acknowledged that effective implementation of the Motor Vehicle Act is a challenge. The Minister reiterated that by 2024, Indian road infrastructure will be on par with the USA.
Last week, the Union Minister also announced that he would soon introduce an innovative car assessment program for India. India will be known as NCAP, in which Indian automobiles will be given ‘star ratings’ based on their performance in crash tests. A star rating of Indian cars based on crash tests is required not only to ensure the safety of passengers in cars but also to increase exports of Indian automobiles.
In a series of tweets, Gadkari announced that India NCAP will serve as a consumer-centric platform that will allow consumers to choose safer cars based on their star-ratings, while in India competition among original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to produce safer vehicles will be encouraged. It will play an important role in making the world the No. 1 automobile hub and making the industry self-sufficient.
