Southbound stretch of 5 freeway to be closed overnight to repair landslide damage IG News

IG News Updates,

According to the California Department of Transportation, a portion of the 5 freeway will be completely closed this week so crews can repair landslide damage.

Department spokesman Michael Comox said all southbound lanes between Vista del Lago Road and Templin Highway in the southern section of Grapevine will be closed overnight Monday through Thursday.

The closure near Castaic will be in place from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. every night. Another shutdown is scheduled to begin at 11:59 p.m. Saturday and will end at 8 a.m. the next day.

Southbound traffic will be diverted east onto Highway 138 and south onto Highway 14 to be rerouted back to the southbound freeway, CalTrans. said in a statement.

The two southbound lanes will reopen each morning following the closure.

Comox said the landslide was first observed on March 21 and grew over the next several days, reaching the shoulder to the south on March 29. Repair work will control the damage at the site and will include paving and resurfacing of the affected area of road.

Work also continues on the near portion of the northbound freeway, which was damaged in January when a hillside saturated by wet weather collapsed—sending part of the slope into two right lanes.
