Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who inaugurated the world’s longest river water transport facility, said that strong transport facilities are necessary for the development of the country.

The distance between Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh and Dibrugarh in Assam is about 3,200 km. Prime Minister Modi inaugurated the service of the long-distance passenger ship ‘MV Ganga Vilas’ through video on Friday.

The ship will take 51 days to travel between the two cities. The ship will cross 27 rivers en route. The ship will cross Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal and enter Bangladesh and then reach Dibrugarh in Assam.

In addition, Prime Minister Modi inaugurated the Tent City on the banks of the Ganges in Varanasi through video. Hundreds of tents are set up there to attract tourists.

In addition, Prime Minister Modi also laid the foundation stone for various projects worth around Rs.1,000 crore to improve inland waterway transport in the states of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal and Assam.

He said on the occasion:

The world’s longest river transport facility between Kasi and Dibrugarh has now been inaugurated. This will help in promoting tourism destinations in North India internationally. This will be a major turning point and usher in a new chapter for tourism in the country. The project will help boost tourism in the country and create new jobs.

River Ganges plays a very important role in the life of Indians. However, after independence, the development work in the riverside areas of the Ganges was not carried out adequately. Because of that, the people who were living in those areas left there in large numbers. This problem was solved in two ways. First, the Ganga River was cleaned through the Clean Ganga Project. On the other hand, the economic activities along the Ganges River continued to improve. Because of it all the states along which the river Ganga flows benefited.

Strengthening river transport:

Strong transport facilities are essential for the development of the country. Rivers play an important role in the development of trade and tourism sectors in the country. Historically, river transport has been heavily used in India.

But after independence, it was not given importance. After 2014, the government continued to take measures to increase river transport. Separate laws and comprehensive schemes were formulated to improve river transport facilities.

The country had only 5 national waterways in 2014. Now it has increased to 111. About 25 routes have come into use. 8 years ago the river freight was 30 lakh metric tonnes. Now it has increased 3 times.

The central government is taking steps to promote port-related development. Cargo and passenger shipping facilities can be improved on 125 rivers in the country. Actions are being taken for that purpose. Prime Minister Modi said that boat tourism facilities are being improved in other parts of the country.
