Students besieged Vice Chancellor of Vishwabharti University for 12 hours and asked for resignation IG News

Visva-Bharati University (VBU) Vice-Chancellor Prof Bidyut Chakraborty was gheraoed at his office for 12 hours by a section of students, demanding his resignation, before he managed to leave in the early hours of Thursday.

A university official said Chakraborty left his office with the help of security guards and reached his residence around 2 am. He said when Chakraborty was leaving the office, a scuffle broke out again between the security personnel and the agitating students.

A section of students on Wednesday gheraoed the vice-chancellor alleging that the university authorities were not allowing some students to take admission and appear for examinations.

He also accused the authorities of preventing some students from pursuing PhD, saying that Chakraborty should resign from his post.

Somnath So, a university student, said security guards beat up the protesters and forcibly lifted the cordon to help Chakraborty out of his office. “The students were harassed by the security guards,” So said.

University officials, however, claimed that no one was forcibly removed from the protest site. “The Vice-Chancellor had to leave the office. This was done with the help of security personnel. No one was beaten up,” said an officer.

The Vice-Chancellor had on Wednesday claimed that some students had barged into his office and assaulted him.

Also, the Visva Bharati University Faculty Association alleged in a statement on Wednesday that Professor Chakraborty was solely responsible for the anger of the aggrieved students.

It added, “The entire Visva-Bharati community strongly supports the students’ demonstration and demands Professor Chakraborty’s resignation as the only solution to this situation.”
