The Supreme Court took suo motu cognizance of the issue of a large number of women inmates who became pregnant in West Bengal jails. The apex court took the step a day after a petition was filed in the Calcutta High Court. The High Court has warned of an alarming trend of female inmates becoming pregnant while incarcerated in correctional homes across West Bengal.

A bench of Justice Sanjay Kumar and Justice Ahsanuddin Amanullah, disturbed by the alarming figures, took cognizance of the serious issue of pregnancy in prison. The court is currently hearing a PIL aimed at addressing the overcrowding crisis in India’s prisons. Last month, the Supreme Court issued directions asking states and union territories to take immediate action.

Among other things, the court ordered the formation of district-level committees to assess the existing infrastructure in jails and determine the need for additional facilities as per the model manual for jails 2016. On Friday, the court asked senior advocate Gaurav Aggarwal, who was appointed as amicus curiae in the case to study the matter and report to the court.
