Telangana: Doctors protest suspension over rat bite incident

Doctors in government hospitals across Telangana and a general hospital in Kamareddy district staged protests outside their hospitals after the director of medical education (DME) on Monday suspended two doctors and a nurse, Tv9 Telugu reported.

A 43-year-old man was bitten by a rat at the Government General Hospital ICU in Kamareddy on Sunday. Shaikh Mujeeb, a patient at the hospital, was found with rat bite marks on his fingers and legs, prompting his family members to raise an alarm and report the incident to the hospital authorities.

Telangana Teaching Government Doctors Association (TTGDA) state general secretary Jalagam Tirupati Rao told The Hindu that rodent-related problems are handled by sanitary staff and not by doctors. “We are staging a protest against the black badge and demand DME to lift the suspension. If not, every doctor in the country will come to the DME office on Tuesday.”

One of the suspended doctors, Vasanth Kumar, who was not present at the hospital on the day of the incident, said, “From February 9, I have been assigned the duties of an external doctor at Gandhi Medical College, Hyderabad. I was not in charge of intensive care at Kamareddy Hospital. How can they suspend me if I was not present at the time of the incident?’

A team of officials from the government’s health department will conduct an inquiry into the incident on Monday, after which the two suspended doctors plan to present their case before the DME.
