However, the situation has been tense for some time due to a dispute over the identity of the shrine.

In August last year Hindu followers of Pir Imam Shah Baba changed the Sufi saint’s name to ‘Sadguru Hans Teji Maharaj’, a move that was strongly opposed by the Sufi’s Muslim descendants. which belongs to the local sayyid community

He sat on a hunger strike, accusing Hindus of ‘insulting’ the dargah. Hindu administrators argued that the name ‘Hans Teji Maharaj’ has been associated with saints in the Dharma Granths for over 4,000 years.

Muslim trustees of the Imam Shah Baba Roza Trust have filed a petition before the authorities against charges of attempting to convert the dargah into a Hindu religious site.

It is alleged in the petition that there is an attempt to convert the dargah into a temple. The Muslim trustee said posters of the deity were put up in the dargah premises and hoardings were put up which read – Om Shri Sadguru Hans Teji Maharaj Akhand Deviya Jyoti Mandir.

The dispute reached the Gujarat High Court in 2022 where the Sunni Awami Forum filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) citing the “Places of Worship Act 1991”. The petition alleged that the dargah was being Converting it into a temple by installing idols is contrary to the trust scheme and provisions of the Act.

Satpanthi (Hindu) Trustees, who hold a majority share on the board of directors of Imam Shah Baba Ruza Trust, have been accused of depriving Muslims of religious rights. and portrayed Pir Imam Shah Baba as a Hindu saint.
