The occasion when, despite millions of deaths, the UN was limited to ‘strong condemnation’

It has been more than a month since the Russian-Ukraine War began between Russia and Ukraine. Lakhs of people have left their country to escape the horrors of this war. There is no sign of the war ending. Several rounds of talks were also held between the two countries, but they have not yielded any positive effect. Meanwhile, the eyes of the whole world are fixed on that global institution, which was established for world peace. However, the United Nations has not been successful in establishing global peace.

The birth of the United Nations coincided with the end of World War II. Events are such that in 1945, America attacked Hiroshima and Nagasaki of Japan with atomic bombs. As a result, lakhs of people became the victims of famine. With this Japan surrendered. In view of the horrors of the world war, the need was felt for such an international organization, which could take the responsibility of establishing peace all over the world. For this purpose, on October 24, 1945, 51 countries including America, Russia gathered in San Francisco. After this the UN was formed. In this, these countries were committed to maintaining international peace and security, developing friendly relations between nations and promoting social progress, better living standards and human rights.

The Security Council of the UN has a total of 20 members. Of these, five are permanent members of America, Russia, France, Britain and China. Let us now know whether the United Nations has been able to fulfill the objectives of its establishment or not. Some talk of war when the UN failed.

Vietnam-America War

In 1954, a fierce war started between Vietnam and America, which lasted for about 10 years. Two million people died in this war. More than 30 lakh people were badly injured. America had to lose 55,000 of its soldiers in this war. This war took place only 10 years after the establishment of the UN, which it completely failed to stop.

UN failed even in Iraq-Iran war

The war between Iraq and Iran began in the 1980s, which lasted for eight years. It is estimated that about one million people died. This time also the United Nations failed to establish peace.

Rwanda Genocide

The Hutu-Tutsi war took place in the African country of Rwanda in 1994. There was a horrific massacre in this war. In this, France openly supported the Hutu majority community there and the Tutsi people were massacred fiercely. In 100 days, 8 lakh people were brutally murdered. People were looking at the UN with hope, but the United Nations failed. In this case, in May 2021, French President Emmanuel Macron also apologized to Rwanda for this genocide.

In this way, there have been many wars since the establishment of the United Nations, but this institution has failed to fulfill its objective of global peace and collective development. The role of the United Nations in the Russia-Ukraine war that has been going on for more than a month has been limited to only ‘strong condemnation’. According to the United Nations, 3.7 million Ukrainians have fled since the start of the war. But the international community has not been able to take any positive initiative to stop this war. It is clear from this that the United Nations has failed to fulfill its core objectives of ‘world peace and stability’.
