Vedanta Patel, deputy spokeswoman for the US State Department, said Congress cannot discuss pending legislation.

Responding to the Pakistani resolution in the House of Representatives, he said that in the American democratic system, the Congress is a separate branch of the government.

He said they had raised the issue with Pakistani authorities. Senior US officials have urged Pakistan to continue respecting the constitutional rights of its citizens, both privately and publicly.

According to the Patel Upanishads, human rights and fundamental freedoms should be respected.

It also includes freedom of expression, peaceful assembly and freedom of religion, said Vedant Patel, deputy spokesman for the US State Department.
