Waterloo area considering closing Hwy 85/Lancaster Street ramp IG News

Irshadgul News report,

The Region of Waterloo is considering an on-ramp and closure of Highway 85 at Lancaster Street in Waterloo and is seeking public feedback on the idea.

In an update posted on its website, the precinct said the number of collisions on the southbound highway between Bridgeport Road and Lancaster Street is high.

The area stated that the section of highway where vehicles embark and disembark is short and creates a problematic “weaving section”.

“The removal of the ramp will result in safer, more smooth traffic operations on the highway,” Kshetra said.

For Lancaster Street itself, the area says the ramps force cyclists and pedestrians to cross traffic flowing onto and off Highway 85.

If the ramps are closed, the area says traffic on Bridgeport Road or Wellington Street can still get on or off the highway.

It is accepting public feedback through an online survey until December 19.

Regional staff’s recommendation on whether or not to close the ramp will go to council for a vote sometime between March and May.

Construction is scheduled to begin in May 2023.
