A student, Priya, who underwent an operation due to a foot membrane problem, had her leg amputated after her condition worsened. The student, who was admitted to the Rajiv Gandhi Government Hospital in Chennai in a critical condition, succumbed to complications on November 15. The family of student Priya alleged that improper treatment was the cause of her death.
Various parties insisted that action should be taken against the doctors responsible for the death. Following this, doctors Balram Shankar and Somasundaram of Periyar Nagar Government Suburban Hospital, Perambur, were dismissed from their jobs. A case of unnatural death was registered on the basis of a complaint lodged at the Peravallur police station.
The Tamil Nadu government appointed a medical team to inquire into the death of the student and submit a report.
After a thorough investigation, the report of the medical team regarding the death of the student was submitted to the police. In the report, it was confirmed that the negligence of the doctors was the reason for the death of the student. It was revealed through the investigation that the doctors who operated on Priya, Balram Shankar, Somasundaram, the anesthetist, nurses and staff were all negligent.
On the basis of the report of the medical board, the case of unnatural death was changed and a case was registered under section 304 A of causing death by negligence. The police informed that legal experts will be consulted and further action will be taken against the doctors.
