Winnipeg costume designer says Manitoba mentors shared Mennonite culture for Best Picture nominee – Winnipeg IG News

Movie fans around the world are already looking forward to March’s 95th Academy Awards, but few Manitobans will be paying special attention to one of the nominees.

However, the local connections don’t end at the source material. Costume designer Quita Alfred — herself a Winnipeggar — did a deep dive into Manitoba Mennonite history to come up with the film’s distinctive, authentic look.

“I was given access to vendors and processes and history that I would never have had access to otherwise, so I’m grateful for that.”

The film – inspired by real-life events in a Mennonite colony named after the province of Manitoba in Bolivia – focuses on Mennonite women who discover that men in their community have been sexually assaulted for years.

Alfred, who has worked in film and TV for more than three decades, said she knew woman talking Something special was about to happen the first time she saw Polly’s script.

“I knew it when I read Sarah’s script immediately. The beauty of the adaptation and the power of Miriam’s novel…. From my first reading I felt it was like no others,” she said.

“I’ve worked on a lot of big films in the past, but to be this close to this excitement is definitely new.”
