WRHA hopes to cut wait times, ease stress on emergency departments with new initiative – Winnipeg IG News

IG news Update,

The Winnipeg Regional Health Authority (WRHA) says it is expanding hours at five clinics across the city in an effort to relieve stress from the backlog of wait-times at urgent care and emergency facilities.

Walk-in connected care clinics will now be open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekends – effectively taking the number of appointments available daily from 150 to 300.

WRHA’s chief medical officer of health, Dr. Jose Reimer, said a significant percentage of people who come to the hospital may instead be treated through a walk-in or a doctor’s office.

Clinics are available on a walk-in basis when you are not able to see your primary care provider right away.

The Health Authority is also launching, as of Thursday, an updated website offering information and resources to help Winnipegers decide on the best options for accessing health care. The site will also display real-time wait information for five walk-in clinics as well as local urgent care and emergency departments.

“By directing people to the right health care service for their needs, and giving them the information they need to make decisions about where to go for health care services at their fingertips, we can make the best possible decisions as soon as possible. More people will be able to receive care, and ultimately reduce the amount of time people spend waiting for care,” Reimer said.
