Elon Musk’s Tesla is behind the commissioning of Europe’s largest battery energy storage system, located in East Yorkshire.

An announcement yesterday said the system has enough electricity to power around 300,000 UK homes for two hours – and is ‘energized’ in winter time.

Commenting on Twitter, Elon Musk wrote: ‘Tesla megapacks are highly effective at addressing surges in electricity demand that cause power outages.’

Developed by Harmony Energy Ltd, and employing a Tesla 2-hour megapack system, the Pillswood project, near Hull, has the capacity to store up to 196 MWh (megawatt hours) of electricity in a single cycle.

Harmony Energy said: ‘This project will provide vital balancing services to the GB electricity grid network, as well as enabling the replacement of fossil fuels with renewable energy.’

The site is located adjacent to National Grid’s Crake Beck substation, the same connection point proposed for phases ‘A’ and ‘B’ of the world’s largest offshore wind farm, Dogger Bank, with the first phase expected to go live in the summer of 2023. ready for. ,

Harmony Energy says, ‘The batteries enable the national grid to maximize the efficiency of wind farms by reducing the time required to shut down a wind farm due to supply/demand imbalances or network interruptions.’

Construction of the Pilswood project is managed by Tesla. The project was originally intended to be commissioned in two phases in December 2022 and March 2023, but both phases have been activated this month to support the national grid in its efforts to provide stable and safe electricity to UK homes. The timetable has been accelerated. in the challenging winter period.

Peter Kavanagh, director of Harmony Energy, said: ‘The completion and commissioning of the Pillswood scheme, the largest of its kind in Europe in terms of energy capacity, is a significant milestone for Harmony Energy Income Trust, which is part of six similar is the first of the projects the trust seeks to To give in the coming year.

‘This is also a significant achievement for Harmony Energy Ltd: the project is the third and largest battery energy storage project we have developed and subsequently delivered through construction.’

“All stakeholders have recognized the importance of getting energy to this project before winter, and we thank Tesla, Inc. for their efforts to complete the project ahead of schedule despite a very challenging geopolitical and global supply chain environment.” We would like to thank G2 Energy and Northern Powergrid. ,

‘Battery energy storage systems are essential to unlocking the full potential of renewable energy in the UK, and we hope this will highlight Yorkshire in particular as a leader in green energy solutions.

‘These projects are not supported by taxpayer subsidy and will play a major role in contributing to a net zero transition, as well as ensuring the future security of the UK’s energy supply and reducing dependence on foreign gas imports.’
